 Chamber Music "Must haves"
Author: sfalexi

I know that there's the gigantic composer database in here. I've looked at it a few times and have been overwhelmed at the amount of information there. I was wondering what fellow clarinetists would consider to be almost "essentials" of chamber music (I'm thinking Clarinet duets to quartets since these would be the easiest to organize for fun playing). I know that the Mozart Clarinet Concerto is pretty much an essential part of a clarinetists library, as is perhaps the Weber, Nielson, Copland, and many others. Now how about as far as chamber ensembles go?

The only thing I could think of was Mozarts 12 duets. I LOVE playing duets and chamber music, so I figured now that I'll have a job this summer and can start to build my library, I'll be tailoring my library more towards chamber works. Thanks for the input.

Here is my opinion of what I think are essential chamber works:

Brahms - Clarinet Quintet
Brahms - Clarinet Trio
Schubert - Sheperd on a Rock
Spohr - Six German Songs
Mozart - Quintet
Weber - Quintet
Nielsen - Quintet (Maybe not essential, but a great work!)
Beethoven - Trio, Op. 11

I think Copland has written a sextet, but am not sure - perhaps some other people could confirm this.

Hope this helps,
Rob

I recently bought the "collected chamber music for clarinet" edited by Ethan Sloane based on Harold Wrights original library.
It has
Mozart: kegelstatt trio and quintet.
Beethoven: septet op 20, trio op11
Weber quintet
Schubert octet
Schumann trio
Brahms trio and quintet

It has a few insightful markings and is a good book to have.

A fun one is the Mendelssohn Concertpiece No.1. I havent played the 2nd but I'm sure its fun 2. It's for 2 Bb's and piano (originally 4 clarinet, basset horn and piano) and sounds flashy yet sits wonderfully well under the fingers so is not to hard to learn or get together as a group. I'm performing this as my ensemble piece as part of AS level music, recording on Monday...morning!

Not as established or such important work (I can't quite say what I mean but I think you know really) as the ones that have been mentioned above but give it try!

I suppose I shouldn't have really put this here since it's not really a must have but ah well, there you go!
