Is it wood? If it's not wood, you don't need to break in a mouthpiece.

Of course its wood (steel ebonite)!

"Steel Ebonite" or "Ebonite" are trade names for hard rubber, not wood. The vast majority of clarinet mouthpieces are made of hard rubber. Hard rubber requires no break-in.

Steel ebonite is hard rubber, not wood.

Sorry to be off topic:

I have a hard rubber mouthpiece that is clearly labeled Steelite Ebonite. There is no makers mark. It has one ligature line up and three down. It is also labeled France and R3.

Can anyone supply any information about it?

Thanks very much.

No....it IS wood. I have a steel ebonite tree growing out my back.
I also have the deed to a really neat bridge in Brooklyn that I can sell you....cheap.

Ray --

My best guess as to the maker of your French mouthpiece: Riffault

I think you probably need to break yourself in. The mouthpiece isn't going to change much but everyboby needs to adjust to a new one.
