 Mouthpiece blanks
Author: contragirl

Hey everyone!

I was just wondering where I would look to find mouthpiece blanks. I am looking for a contralto blank, more exactly. But I would like to learn more about refacing anyway.

If anyone can give me a site, or a place where I can order a catelogue, that would be great.

And do you think it would be a better idea to buy a blank and get it refinished by someone by hand? Is it cheaper to purchase a blank? (I saw that the Bb blanks can go for about $20, and bass clarinet for $30 at the one place I found)

Help mee!
Thanks! :)

You don't re-face a blank, you face it. That is if the word face is in fact a verb. Zinner sells blanks as does Chris Pyne I believe. You can start by buying a re-facing kit from Feree's or Allied and starting with a very close mouthpiece like a Selmer A, Meyer 1 etc. and taking the face out to a larger size. Measurement charts are around for lots of brands. The true art is in the pitch of the curve or tangent. Facing lengths and their balance to the chamber shape and backbore is hard to achieve. Mouthpiece repair is handy to learn as well.

Besides what Mark mentioned, you may also try buying a whole bunch of the Buffet stock mouthpieces for $5 per piece and see what you can do with them facing wise. If you can get those to work, you're well on your way! It just seems like this is a much cheaper alternative to paying $30 per blank when you're just getting started.

There are some serious builders haunting this BBS, Chris Hill for one.

He may be able to steer you in the right direction.

I recall that Weiner music had some Riffault blanks rolling around that they were selling reasonably (under $20 for a fresh piece of hard rubber)...

Before you start - say goodbye to your family and friends... you won't be seeing them after you depart down this path.

If you've seen The Lord of the Rings movies, it's like that - only without the scenery or cool outfits.

Hans Zinner are the finest blanks going right now... I don't know where you would get others. Zinner maintains a nice site.

My experience to date tells me that mouthpieces are the most mysterious of components to try to figure out. Oh,granted, the tip opening bit is pretty straightforward but the internal configuration including its volumetric content remain a mystery to me.

It's not as easy as simply getting any blank and putting the same facing on it as is on your favorite mouthpiece. If you get a blank to give to a maker, it may not be something the maker can work with. Most makers have specific blanks made for them by Babbit, Zinner, or whomever, and stick with that because it gets them the results they are looking for.
