Couple of questions --
Anyone know how much a Dan Johnson Bb mouthpiece cost?
Anyone know the difference between the Selmer HS* and S (which is better for a vandoren v12 3 or 3-1/2?

Thanks

The HS*is a much more closed mouthpiece. According to my copy of Selmer's "2003 Showbook" (their catalog), the HS* has a "close" tip opening of 0.97 with a medium facing of 18mm. The S has a "medium" tip opening of 1.15 with a short facing of 17mm. I don't use Vandoren reeds, so I really can't say anything about how well either strength will work on the two mouthpieces. My experience suggests that it probably will be easier to play the reed strengths you mentioned with the HS* than the S because of the smaller tip opening. That's just my experience. I'm sure others have different opinions!

I played on an HS* for many years. It's a very closed-tip mouthpiece, and the entire bite area is very small -- so small that, in my opinion, you have to work way too hard to get a full sound out.

This is just my experience, of course, but when somebody introduced me to, of all things, the Vandoren B45, I thought I'd been shown the Promised Land. I had a power and flexibility to my sound I'd never had before.

I've since moved on to other, better mouthpieces. But now when I try out my HS* on for size, I feel like I'm blowing through a flattened straw.

Agree on the HS*. the sound of this piece is awful....my feelings are the same for the C* on clarinet and sax!!!

One good thing about the HS*: it was my beginner mouthpiece, and it's definitely an embouchure builder. But there are other student mouthpieces out there that do the same without the inflexibility.h

You would probably be better with a non file cut reed on an HS. Definitely not a V12, file cut and for long faced mouthpieces. Grand concert, Mitchell Lurie standard, Vintage, Lavoz, Marca or something like that. If you want a Selmer that plays with V12's try the C85 series. I use a C85 120 with V12 3 1/2 reeds for military band playing and it has a great high register, responsive down low but definitely a band sound not orchestral.

Are you talking about Dan Johnston (with a "t")? If so, they go for $85.

I just got a HS** . It is my best and quickly became my favorite. I dont know about HS or HS*. I was hanging around my music store and the repairguy in the back was playin a horn that sound reallll smooth. I asked what mouthpiece and reeds he used. Says he had his HS** for years and hasnt touched his others. I just had to try one out since I have been searching for the best one. Seems selmer makes good clarinet mouthpieces, i also have one that just says "3" on it and it plays very nice, better than my new 5RVL. I was also very suprised by the way a few used goldentones sounded.
