Could anyone suggest a favorite recording of the Weber clarinet quintet? Any other suggestions on recordings/performances of Weber pieces?

Charles Neidich does a good job with the Concertos, a little avan guarde (forgiveness, i had no clue how to spell that), but nonetheless, fun recordings. Manasse does an excellent job as well.

The recording that I have is the David Shifrin recording. It is rather well-done; the Quintet can be very boring with regards to the string quartet accompaniment, however, this recording keeps the energy going.

I noticed a couple of votes for Manasse. Though I'm by no means all that qualified to give a well-imformed opinion, I have a few of his recordings and feel he does a flawless job. I love his sound as well. Anyone know what kind of setup he has, mouthpiece, reeds, that sort of thing?

I can't speak for Jon, but according to his endorsements he is a Vandoren artist. . .mouthpieces and reeds. And a Buffet clarinet artist.
If I recall correctly, those Weber recordings were made back in the 80s, when I was an undergraduate at Northwestern. The two Chicago classical radio stations used to play those cds all the time. I remember that many of us were really impressed by them. It's not easy to impress college clarinet majors, let me tell you (although that's pretty obvious from reading this board).
Starting in the fall Jon will be playing principal clarinet at the Metropolitan Opera, replacing Ricardo Morales. That's about as good as you can do in the clarinet playing business.

Two recordings of this piece spring to mind, the Eddy Vanoosthuyse record on Sony which is awesome, and also Walter Boeykins. Both have tremedous concept of the piece, and tend to bring out the showy aspect without tackiness.

For many years Jon Manasse was playing on an O'Brien crystal, which he showed me after a performance at Clarinetfest in the early 90's.
He may have been using the O'Brien on the Weber recordings...GBK

I know on Manasse's CD "Clarinet Music from 3 Centuries" (distributed by XLINT Music) he is identified as a Buffet musician and is pictured with a crystal mouthpiece. I never heard a clarinet sound so... sine wave like. When I first bought the CD I had mixed reactions. On one side I was in awe. That was the good reaction. The other reaction was a feeling of such inadequacy because I got to see all that I wasn't. At that time I had not even been playing for a year (just over a year ago) and I had no idea it was even possible to play that well or even to develop such a sound. It was a lesson. Until that time all I really knew of clarinet playing was Pete Fountain. Pete seemed reachable. Manasse... I've got the CD in right now and I'm still in awe. Any idea what strength reed he plays?

I just got these recordings. Now I hear why Jon Manasse is so well admired. There were made in the late 80's. And inside is a picture of Jon Manasse at the time. He looks like HE just came out of college, if that. No crystal mouthpiece n his instrument in this picture.
By the way, look at April 26th on the calendar at the top right. He'll be in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Saturday night. Copland concerto.

I think Manasse is currently playing on a Greenline Buffet Vintage. I'm not sure about the mouthpiece (though he definitely is no longer playing a crystal mouthpiece), but I know he had some input on the new M30 vandoren mouthpiece design. His reeds are primarily Vandoren, though he is constantly experimenting. His ligature is some funky French inverted thing, not sure who makes it.
Look for his recently recorded and soon to be released recodings of the Mozart and Copland concerti- they should be fantastic!

I met Jon Manasse about a year ago at the late lamented WW&BW in New York, when he was picking out instruments for his students. At that time, he was playing a wood instrument -- as I recall, an R-13 Prestige. However, the instruments he picked out were Greenline Festivals, which he said were excellent.
I asked him about his mouthpiece, which he said was a prototype for the Vandoren M-30.

The official explanation was that their lease came up for renewal and the landlord wanted an astronomical rent. They were also many blocks away from the other music stores, so they didn't get the stream of "music row" traffic. The area is a permanent construction zone, and the store was never very crowded. I suppose it was a combination of factors.

I had the good fortune of meeting and hearing Pascal in concert in France in the mid 80s. He is a tremendous player.
I have heard he still is Principal with Orchestre de Paris.
I can also add this a fantastic woodwind section. Check the Barebiom recording of La Mer on DG with him on solo clarinet.
