Tip of reed or just below?
Author: Dan Oberlin 2017

Should the tip of the tongue contact the very tip of the reed and then move
directly back, or should it touch the reed at a spot a millimeter or so below
the tip and move both down and back?

I have always thought of it contacting just below the tip and moving down, but not back. It is important to move the tongue as little as possible. I have always felt that by trying to pull back, you involve much more of the tongue and therefore it is much slower than only moving the tip.

I take in a lot more mouthpiece than others (a lot), so I end up tonguing below the tip. I don't think so much as to "where" you tongue, just as long as you put enough pressure to stop the vibrations and release to let the vibrations begin again. That's the interruption in the sound. Of course using as little of your tongue is vital since it takes less muscle, effort, and is a quicker movement. I don't think it matters where you strike the reed though.

Tongue on the undersurface of the tip area--not the exact "tip" of the reed itself.

Well, I think I tounge weird. I kind of use my lower lip and tonge at the same time, or at least it feels that way. My teacher said she couldnt tell the difference, and that it actually sounded really clean. the prob. is I cannot tounge very fast (how do you tonge really fast on a cl. ??) either, it feels imposible. IM not sure if this will effect my playing later. Does anyone know what im talking about????

As to what Domingo wrote my book written by Charles Neidich and Fumiko Ohshima tells like this. (1st etc are harmonics numbers.)

Tip
9th
1st
7th
3rd
5th

At the same time the tongue should be adjusted by its arc inside the aural cavity:higher tone, bigger arc and forward (to the teeth).

I do not know a human being, especially a grown up, can do this with ease.

Cf. My book ,'Clarinet Training Book,is written in Japanese published by Ongaku-no-tomo sha.
