Is it just me? Ever since I got my MP refaced and touched up (Mr. Spiegelthal helped me out) my throat Bb has been better. While of course not as clear as other notes (which I attribute to my clarinet not being the best), it has projected a bit more and seems a little less stuffy. Is that just a psychological thing? Or does the mouthpiece actually contribute to this. BTW, I also moved up in reed strength. Could that be it?
Just wondering . . .

Gee, Alexi, I would hope that my refacing work produces more than just "placebo effect"......By the way, you can call me "Dave" ("Mr. Spiegelthal" was my Dad.......[LOL]). All seriousness aside, the mouthpiece can make a world of difference in a number of ways, as can the instrument, but in the final analysis the player is the #1 determinant of the sound.

I would say yes the mouthpiece can have an effect on the tone in the throat area. I noticed an improvement when trying mouthpieces for my Eb clarinet over the stock mouthpiece. The zinner based mouthpieces sounded the best.

Sorry Dave. Thanks again for the work you did for me. I just thought that my bad Bb was a manifestation of my instrument rather than the mouthpiece. Looks like I was wrong. However I am now going on a new instrument search. Now that I've got a great MP, why not compliment it with a whole new setup (yes I am changing reeds and trying out new ligatures as well). Just wondering cause sometimes I think things can be more psychological, like when my dad gave me that "special" baseball glove that allowed me to catch ANY ball I wanted! Boy did I improve with that glove . . . .

Alexi, I shouldn't have downplayed the psychological aspect so much, I suppose.....just like your 'magic baseball glove', having a clarinet/mouthpiece/reed combination that really feels good just makes one want to practice and play and play some more ---even if the audible improvement to the listener is minor or negligible, the psychological benefits of having a comfortable setup can make a major difference in the motivation (and thus the eventual playing) of the performer......like you said.
