Lyons C Clarinet - Mail from Graham Lyons
Author: Ken Shaw

I e-mailed Graham Lyons about the price of the Lyons C Clarinet:

> Mr. Lyons -

> Clarinet of $160 (plus $20 shipping)to members

> Is the $160 offer still open? If so, I would like
> to buy one. Please let me know.

> Ken Shaw

He wrote back as follows:

> Not quite right! The special offer price is $170

I just checked the dollar equivalent of 121 British pounds on two websites, and it is $196 from Cooks (http://www.thomascook.com/cgi-bin/xchg011_calculator.pl) and $199.98 from Universal Currency Converter (http://www.xe.net/ucc/).

Still not a bad price.

Read to the bottom of this quite long e-mail - I have proof!!! :-)

Ok, so how come he only charged me $160, and shipping was $20. I'm sitting here looking at an ivoice of $180 total.

I enclose a copy of all of the e-mails including the original posting from Patricia Smith:

>Hi. I am a Clarinet Professor, and a Concert Artist for Boosey / Rico
Intl.
from the Phila. , PA area (USA). I would like to order one of the Lyons C
Clarinets for the ICA special member price of $160. I am a member of the
ICA (had several Competition winners for them).
How do I go about ordering? Do you take credit cards, or do you need a
check?<

Dear Mr Blumberg,

Thanks for your interest.

I take Visa and Mastercard. However, please write, telephone or fax me the
following details: card number, expiry date, name on the card, your
address. Do not email the details since I am not yet set up for secure
e-commerce. Delivery should be around 10 days or less from the receipt of
your payment.

Shipping costs are $20 so the total would be $180.

Would you like to check out my Clarinet Sonata? Jim Gillespie, ICA's
journal editor, gave the US premiere at a clarinet symposium in Olklahoma
in June and the sheet music stand there (Lyuben Music) then sold out of
copies.

Subject: Re: [kl] Earliest Age to Start Playing Clarinet?

I have followed this thread with interest; I am in the process of purchasing
a lyons C clarinet, not just to teach one of my sons to play, but also for
my own use.

Following are direct quotes from Mr. Lyons' reply to my inquiries concerning
his clarinet:

1. There are no current US distributors but, because maintenance and repair
is so easy, lack of a local distributor is hardly a problem. The pads are
rot- and waterproof and I would anyway include some spare pads. Any keys
that needed replacing could be obtained from me within10 days from receiving
a call or email and the cost would be unlikely ever to exceed $20; but there
would be a $10 minimum charge. I would also send a repair
and maintenance sheet with the clarinet.

2. The cost is US$240 which includes shipping. Delivery within 10 days,
often sooner. You can pay by credit card. However, if you are a member of
the ICA (Internation Clarinet Association) there is a
one-clarinet-per-member offer at US$160 being advertised in the forthcoming
issue.

3. The mouthpiece that comes with the clarinet is quite reasonable but any
E-FLAT clarinet mouthpiece (Yamaha, Vandoren, Selmer) can be substituted.
It takes E-flat clarinet reeds but you can use B-flat reed
if you cut off the base of the reed to fit.

Your son, being larger than average, could probably start in a year's time
(When Chris is about 5 1/2, summer of 2000). If he does start then, it
might be wise to limit practice sessions to 15 minutes at a time during the
transition between his milk (baby) and adult teeth.

Yours sincerely

Patty here again. I am more than willing to try this new instrument,
because I really enjoy trying new things. Also, as I understand some of the
modifications are similar to sax fingerings - now I may be wrong on this,
don't quote me - and I play saxophone, it won't be that difficult for me to
play this clarinet in C and use it in lessons with some of my flute
students. (I teach Beginning sax and flute and beginning and intermediate
piano, as well as clarinet to intermediate and advanced levels, advanced
being college prep).

I'd like to hear from other people who have tried this clarinet.

Patty Smith

$200 is a good price for it. The Clarinet is quite unique. Super light weight, streamlined to not double some of the keys that may make the Clarinet more complicated, unique rubber style pad desigh for seating the pads.
In a lesson for a student, I sightread the Charlie Parker piece KOKO at 310 (with the metronome) on the Lyons Clarinet - it worked fine. Had to make some quick fingering choices though.

The current issue of Clarinet magazine offers it at the $170 price. That's what I paid, and with shipping and the exchange rate it worked out to $199-something.

Well, on the plastic Mouthpiece, and Rico #2 reed that came with it, I sounded great......... ;) but that's just me....
Seriously, it is impressive, but I do not think I would play it in an Orchestra (if I wanted to keep the gig). It was designed for kids, and for that,I do think it is a great idea.

sounds interesting...I'm looking for something to play in a klezmer band/contradance orchestra, and I'm tired of sight reading and transposing from fiddle parts.....this should be fun, not work at that level....had a chance to buy a buffet-carl fisher C from steve malareskey a while ago, passed on it, now regret it...

It to me is worth every penny of it's cost.

Dear Kathy Beatty and D.Blumberg,
How do you like the Clarinet? Would you recommend it? What's your opinion?

I am very impressed with this clarinet. It sounds great. I did swap out the original plastic mouthpiece with my best Eb mouthpiece, and I'd recommend that anyone playing it get the best Eb mouthpiece they can afford. This same recommendation goes for Eb clarinets, which can sound terrible or even be unplayable with a bad mouthpiece - trust me, I have one (a Geo. Bundy). As for recommendations, for me it's an expensive toy, but well worth it for what I intend to use it for - my own, amateur, enjoyment. I don't know that I'd recommend it for professional use, but then again I don't play professionally. There is a person on the clarinet mailing list who has used it professionally, but now has bought a "real" C clarinet since she's gotten more gigs.
