 Repair shops in Michigan

I live in SW Michigan and just picked up a nice Buffet Bass Clarinet that needs some TLC. I have adjusted as much as my meager ability lets me to bring this horn into playing condition, but I need a professional check up most notably in the G#/C# key which isn't seated correctly.

My problem is that I haven't been exactly happy with the ability of the locals to repair my instrument. I sent my old Bundy into Marshalls and it came back without the upper registar and a F#(under the A key) stuck shut. I had to send it back to get them to replace tenon corks that had gone almost black with age. I don't mind doing the minor work for myself, but come on.......

Either way, I was wondering if anyone can recomend a shop over toward Detroit that can handle my nice new-used horn without making me do half with work when I get it home.

If truly in SW Mich, try heading toward Chicago and working with the Brannens (www.brannenwoodwinds.com). One caveat, particularly with used instruments -- they will only work on professional models.

Good luck with your new (old) horn.

I would rate my previous b-flat as perhaps 5 out of 10. The one that replaced it was 7.5 out of 10. After Brannons overhauled it, 10 out of 10.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Robert Scott, in my old home town of Lansing, not far from SW Mich! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Don,

I was also thinking about Robert Scott but did not post to this trhread. There is also another fine clarinet repair tech in the area (a clarinet degree from MSU) but I can't remember his name. I think he might be at a music store in Okemos.

Re: the music store in Okemos- you might be talking about Meridian Winds. I taught clarinet there while I was getting my degree at MSU. They've been gone for awhile, though, maybe 5 years. Eric Saterlee was the owner and a fine clarinet repairman, but ended up closing up shop after a legal issue with the music store across town. I think they might have kept the repair shop around for awhile, but I'm not sure if they're still there.

Bob Scott is great IF you can get to see him - he is a very busy guy.

Lori, et al.

Eric is still around. Meridian Winds is located in Haslett, MI. The address is 5921 Buttonwood Dr. His phone is 517-339-7333. With the upcoming NAPBIRT convention in Cleveland this next week, 4/25-4/28, he may or may not be in.

Eric does excellent tenon replacement work and also makes custom barrels. He has done both for me since I do not own a lathe.
