 Register Key Vent

I have a question that in my head is probably already answered, but I don't want to end up being a clarinet hypocindriac...

My swab got caught on the register key vent inside the bore. It is now a little loose and wiggles. It doesn't seem to be in danger of falling out.

Should it be loose, or does my baby need a trip to the doctor?

(Luckily this happened at the end of the school year, so I have a breather between playing seasons...)

No, it shouldn't be loose.
Yes, take it to a repair tech.

yes, I agree wholeheartedly with J Butler. A trip to the Pediatrician aka: baby doctor is in order.
The tube is 'glued in' with shellac cement , like a pad. To properly chane it out, a small amount of heat is needed...in the correct spot.
If not done properly, one runs the risk of chipping wood away from teh vent hole surface.

dennis

ps...if it's an A clarinet, look into having it replaced with a tube from a Bb.

The vent on my R-13 was easy to remove using the handle of a small pair of pliers, as suggested in the instructions with Abe Galpers register key. I tried using wax for "firming" the replacement in the hole, but eventually found "plumber's tape" better. So if you are at all handy you can, with care, do it yourself; but be GENTLE. Also, try a silk swab. They are much less prone to snag or catch in the bore.

It was, once a upon a time, a silk swab, but has becomed ripped and needs replacing.

Jo:

This is why I always pull my swab through the top of the upper joint. If it gets stuck it's easy to back it out as all the material isn't yet inside the bore.

MOO,
Matt
