I was fascinated to recently learn that Brahms was friends with the great surgeon Billroth, who was an amateur musician. In fact, Brahms dedicated several pieces to his friend. In my personal experience, it seems that many physicians/health care professionals have more than a passing interest in music. Have others noticed this? I'm curious where I can learn more about the Brahms/Billroth friendship, and yes, I've "goggled" the topic.
Thanks!

The intense friendship and mutual respect between Brahms and Billroth is chronicled in detail in Karl Geiringer's famous Brahms biography: Brahms - His Life and Work.
They had a fascinating relationship which lasted 27 years (until Billroth died), and one in which Brahms sought both the approval and opinion of Billroth before each new composition.
A very important figure in the life of Brahms...GBK
