I'm looking for some help from techs out there.
Can anyone give me the measurements of the distances at which the keys should rise from the clarinet (or redirect me to a website that would help)? Are there "standards?" for these pertaining to intonation, and does it vary from brand to brand? Or should I adjust them note by note (that is to say painstakingly) using a tuner? I am refurbising an old horn and would appreciate any input you can give me on this matter.
Thanks all !
Jas

I've found generally that the pad should clear the tone hole by about 1/4 to 1/3 the diameter of the hole - within reason. You may wish to tweak individual pad heights after they're all seated and the horn is playing well, but this clearance ratio will get you 'in the ballpark' right away.

I don't thing there is a standard as such.
Many compromises are made in ever clarinet design.
Some notes may be inherently sharp. Some of these can be lowered by reducing th opening of a pad, but this may give the note a 'fuzzy' sound before the pitch is altered.
Some notes may be inherently flat. It is quite possible that the venting is already sufficient and is not the causative factor. In this case increasing the pad opening will have no effect on pitch.

Well said, Ron and G NZ, essentially my thots, really a "tuning problem" to me. Partic on student horns, I first try to "get the fuzz out" by opening slightly, then worry about sharpening the pitch. If too much, its a job for better expertise than mine! Don
Thanx, Mark, Don
