I'd like to experiment with Legere reed. I hear they are 'just as good as wood cane' and no work is needed on them...good to use right out of the box.

Do a search on this board. There are many many discussions of these reeds. I think the most recent one was only a couple of weeks ago.

I bought a couple for bass clarinet and hate them. They tell you to buy a strength a bit higher than a cane reed. The ones I have I can barely play on. I would not recommend them.

You can "soften" them by dipping the tip portion in very hot water (just off the boil) for 1 second. Legere will, I believe, give you the precise way of doing this.

I am well pleased with my Legere reed. For want of a better term, it seems
is has a "harder" sound than cane, but has several advantages.

I use a Legere on Eb soprano (for practicing only) and a Fibracell on bass full time. They both work well but the trick is finding the right strength.

So for a Vandoren V12 3-1/2 I should get Legere 4-1/2?
There is no way of trying them out with out shelling the money and it can be a big waste cause stores dont take back open reed boxes. None that I've seen!

Have you considered going to the Legere web site http://www.legere.com/home.htm
for info before making statements that are totally false.
You will find the appropriate strength to use and find out that you can exchange for a different strength and even get your money back!
If they are good enough for Richard Hawkins and James Campbell plus a lot of others, they are likely good enough for you.

I've used Legere as well; Legere will indeed replace the reeds if you don't have the right strength. They're wonderful for keeping in your case to have in a pinch, you know, those days when the cane reeds won't perform. Or use them for practice when you don't want to mess with the others. Just don't use them exclusively for practice. Some use them for performance.
It's wonderful to have one thrown in your case when the others seriously misbehave, you can count on them to behave for you. I have to be more serious about finding the right strength now that I've changed mouthpieces, and Guy Legere is constantly improving his product as he receives feedback.

The manufacturer (as mentioned by an ACTUAL expert, Peter Spriggs) has the straight poop, for once without too much hype.
********
The same people that complain about the missing scintilla of performance from synthetic cane are the same ones complaining about the limitations of natural cane.... these synthetic reeds are not a replacement, but an adjunct
to the 'good wood'.
A library is only useful if you go to the shelves and pull the book to read!
