What do people think about Pete Fountain mouthpieces and reeds---Worth a try?

I have used the reeds and my first impression was good. Right out of the box they were consistent well balanced and generally felt fine. While playing about 10 or 15 reeds for the life of them I was hearing some mid range frequencies accentuated in my sound that I did not care for. I am sure that your mileage will vary. I have had good luck with V12's and have used them exclusively. I have bought a box of the Gonzalez FOF reeds but have not started to break them in yet. We shall see. Try the Pete Fountain reeds . I think they are worth a try. Please let us know your impressions.

The PF crystal mpc I have has a very stuffy sound regardless of reeds I've tried, so I stick with the Woodwind K10M.

I went from a K10M to a Pete Fountain mpc . . . I actually found it to have a less stuffy sound than the K10M, but this may also be due to the bore size of the clarinet, etc. I like the PF because it has a nice, rich, resonant sound and very good response. For me, it was the happy medium between something very open with no response and something very closed with excellent response. The response is as good as that of a more closed mpc, such as the K10M, but the sound is more like that of a more open mpc.

Never tried the PF reeds . . . Please let us know if you decide to try them!

I've used the reeds and I think they are very good. They don't hold up for as long as a Daniels or a Vandoren, but right out of the box, I've found more instantly usable reeds from the PF box than any other. Good strong sound, but, as I said, get good use early, cause theyll break down sooner.

Thought I'd dig up this topic again seeing as I finally went out and got a box of PF reeds . . .

I've tried three of them, and none of them had that awful fuzziness I've been getting from Vandorens as of late.

Also, they have that nice, pure sound like a softer reed has in the lower register, but they don't get thin and nasty (bright) in the upper register. They give a fair amount of resistance without being too hard or too soft. I'd say that the number strength they give is probably about equivalent to a Zonda of the same number in the hard substrength.

One of them sounded gritty, but I sanded the back of it and it was fine after that.

Bascially, it beats doing surgery on V12s and still having them sound not-so-great, and they're cheaper than Zondas (and don't seem to waterlog as easily). I'm only concerned about their longevity. I'll let you know when the first one bites the dust.
