I had the opportunity yesterday to attend a clarinet master class followed by a concert by The Prairie Winds woodwind quintet. One of the professors at UW-La Crosse was kind enough to invite members of our community band to sit in on the classes and of course come to the concert. All members gave classes in late afternoon, and I heard good comments from the other sections as well. (Jonathan Keeble, Flute; Jelena Dirks, Oboe; Susan Warner, Clarinet; David Griffin, Horn; Timothy McGovern, Bassoon)
Susan Warner did a great job with 4 college clarinet players who each played portions of the pieces they are currently working on, or had a section that demonstrated something they've been struggling with. She made it interesting for those of us watching, and non-threatening, exciting and effective for those she was working with. After each student played a bit, she picked out a technique they needed work on - phrasing, finger position, etc. After the student could replicate what she intended, they were instructed to "make it their own".
The evening concert was outstanding. There were some very complex pieces, and they really seemed to be enjoying being on stage. The players had a lot of eye contact with each other and the synergy was really amazing.
The Prairie Winds group is currently on a midwestern tour, and I'd recommend seeing them if they come to your area. They will also be in residence at the Madeline Island Music Camp this summer. They invited talented HS and college students to audition. I believe they said it was a week of immersion in chamber music.
My concert promo for the week....
