 Music camps for junior High
Author: Sandra F.

Hi Everyone! I'm looking for a camp that would be suitable for young clarinetists, preferably in the greater Philadelphia, PA area. This could include most of southeastern PA to Allentown and Reading, PA areas. The clarinetists are talented and in 5-6-7-8 grades. I'm aware of high school camps. Please post information for day camps and overnight stay camps. Thanks! Sandra

The only camp I'm familiar with that offers a session for younger musicians is Kinhaven. They're up in Vermont. I believe their web address is: http://www.kinhaven.org

It is a residential camp, and I'm not sure how young the youngest students are. But I've heard lots of great stuff 'cause my husband attended their H.S. sessions about 20 years ago!

There's Crane Youth Music in WAY upstate Potsdam New York- I went there twice and can give you more information if you want it. I think it's best for students finishing around 7th to 9th grade. There's also a program at the Wyoming Seminary in Wilkes-Barre (I was accepted to that one but never went). I'm not sure if they take middle-schoolers. A program in Mansfield was also mentioned on this board very recently.

By the way, do you live in Philadelphia? I'm going to a college very near the city next year and have some local clarinet-related questions.

The University of Delaware (in Newark, DE) usually does a middle school band camp in the summer. If my memory serves me correctly, it's five days long or so. It's a day camp only. I did it multiple times a few years ago and always had a good time, the instrumental instructors are generally music students at the university, often music ed. majors so they're sort of 'practicing' on you. In addition to full band rehearsals there were instrumental rehearsals, some theory and aural training, etc.

EDIT: Check out http://www.music.udel.edu/public/cms/ensemblecamps.html for more info.

Sandra - Elizabethtown College has an excellent music camp. I went there every year I was in high school, my students go, and they love it.

I'd also suggest Lebanon Valley College, although I can't speak to its' current reputation, it used to be excellent as well.

West Chester has one, too, but Elizabethtown is superior to that.

I went to Crane Youth Music for two years- after 8th grade and after 9th grade. It's two weeks long. For clarinetists, it's a band-based experience. As for level of difficulty, I was a NYSSMA Level 4 (intermediate) the first year I went and was in the middle of the clarinets in the middle band. The second year, I played the Weber Concerto No. 1 and was fifth seat in the top band. There are three bands of varying skill so you generally have music that challenges you but isn't too hard. There are also clarinet ensembles. I think it's a great program for younger students but the second year I went I found the lack of individual freedom very annoying. You can't even walk around the (completely empty) SUNY Potsdam campus alone. It's very structured and regular and the social scene is good. Dr. Woy taught clarinet when I was there. He's great, but I've been told that someone else taught more recently (you should check). There's probably information on the Potsdam website: http://www.potsdam.edu

I'll e-mail you about my Philadelphia questions. I hope this information helps. Tell me if you have any other specific questions.
