I have an R-13 I bought new in 1995, that now needs an overhaul, however I can't find anyone to do it, so I want to send it away. However, being a college student, I obviously need something to play while it is away, I do have a Buffet S-1, which I played before the R-13, it played nicely, until I let someone overhaul it, and now it is ruined. I've had it in and out of the repair shop in the last year, trying it get into condition. The only thing I can do is try to get the S-1 a proper overhaul, by sending it off, and then the R-13, but the question is where, any suggestions? Thanks.

If you read down the list, you'll see that I've decided to do that sort of thing myself, but if you aren't mechanically inclined, you might try Clark Fobes in San Francisco. He has a pretty good reputation, though I must confess that I've never used his services myself.

You don't say where you're from, but I can suggest a few Canadian locations for you: in Toronto, there's Gary Armstrong, who both sells instruments and repairs them, or in Halifax, there's Marius Kowalski, who's working through the Musicstop there. I can personally attest to Marius' ability: he does my horns all the time, and he's very good. He also tends to be very nice to students, in terms of avoiding doing unnecessary work and rounding down the time it took rather than rounding up. I don't know if you are close enough to either of these locations, but you might want to consider them. I hope you get it all figured out; you'll be amazed at the difference when your horn has a really good overhaul.

Sorry, I forgot to mention I'm in Maryland. Actually, I was told of a few places, one person got their clarinet back and it turned out bad, so that's out, and I've had bad experiences with trying to get it worked on, so I'm trying to find someone that I can trust with my clarinets....that isn't going to break the bank. I'm getting desperate and really need a good working clarinet, so I'm willing to send it away.

The repair tech i use is quick, does a great job and is very inexpensive. Only problem is he's in Davenport, Iowa. But they do shipping just the same. I'm in Texas and i had my horns back from them in just under two weeks (including shipping time).

One question... why does your R-13 from '95 already need an overhaul? My horn was new from '94 and all i've had done to it is have the spring tensions adjusted and the general adjustments that clarinets need.

I guess my clarinet suffers from heavy usage. It hasn't been in the shop at all, I can't find anyone I can trust. Also I think the drastic changes in humidity has taken its toll on it, especially the key corks.

I live in Santa Barbara. I has my R 13 overhauled a week ago by my favored technician Norman Stevens at 1 805 687 4191. He is the best . Also we have in town Nick Rail who is very good but more expansive and takes longer. his phone is 805 569 5353. Give them a call. Charles

Katherine mentioned that Gary Armstrong in Toronto is really good. I can tell you that they do a very good job (got my instrument back in less than one week, even in a moderately busy period), and the job was reasonably priced.
One thing, however: Gary only takes credit cards or cash.
So if you are ever in Toronto, check this place out. Any of us in the Toronto area can get you the address and phone number. (they have a toll-free number as well) They even have a catalogue of stuff, which is done mail order. (no web page yet; working on one)

If you're in MD and not too far from DC, I"ve had L&L in Gaithersburg overhaul a number of instruments over the last 3 years and they have done very good work. When there has been a problem they've taken care of it right away. The give 12 month warranties on repads/overhauls and honor them. They just did my C. 1915 Penzel Mueller A clarinet and when I asked them to be sure not to buff the maker's marks they siad no problem and didn't. Some shops will buff the marks till there's nothing left to see.
Now I'm hoping that you're not going to say that they're the shop that messed you clarinet up for you.

You might also want to try Steve Fowler at Fowler Music Service in Pasadena Maryland. His website address is http://pw1.netcom.com/~sfowler/index.html. I haven't used him yet, but he has a good reputation and I have talked to him quite a bit on the phone and he is very knowledgable. You may want to ask him about his background in instrument repair, it is very impressive.
