 Annoying recurrance
Author: Cindy

I have discovered little that is as annoying to a musician as not being able to use their hand. Unless it happens every year. I had a weird injust to my hand/wrist last year that made playing utterly painful. After much stress and far too many doctor's visits, it was said to be overuse. I didn't play for two weeks (aargh) and was told it was fine. Now, almost exactly a year later, it's exactly the same. Why is it that this happens two years in a row? What should I do about it? This is horrible, because it happened right before our nationals for percussion. Meh. Okay, sorry, just ranting before I leave really really early for my plane flight.

So many instruments to play........so little time to play them!

Cindy -

Tough luck. This is not something you can grit your teeth and work through. You need some professional advice.

There are physical therapists who specialize in the problems of musicians. I strongly advise you to go to one of them. Often the problem can be alleviated by a change of hand position. That's what did it for me.

Best regards.

Yes, by all means see someone who works with musicians. Before you go you might think about any seasonal patterns to your practice, performance, or even other activities (sports, gardening, whatever) that might contribute to a problem the same time of year. Good luck--I am having a tissue graft to my lower gum soon that will also mean not playing for several weeks :-(

Did I catch that correctly, you're a percussionist?

And your wrist hurts from striking things?

I would wonder how much of the problem is stress related with the same situation occuring just before Nationals. My "Rhumy" tells me some of my arthritic problems could be keyed by stress. Have we ever done a thread on this?

About the gum graft - How did it go?

I just had one to my lower gum line. I waited two weeks before playing clarinet again, but now I am concerned that playing again may have disturbed the graft.

Thanks

If it's Tendonitis, it could haunt you for many, many years.

Might be playing related, could also be completely unrelated.

Hi mam clarinet. It's been several years now so I don't remember exactly how long I waited to play again, but two weeks seems like a pretty short time. I do remember lots of pain and I am not a real quick healer, so I don't think I even felt like trying to play for awhile.
