I'm hoping there's lots of UK knowledge out here. I'm really keen to train in instrument repair, does anyone know of suitable places in the UK (midlands area)? Thanks.

I am not in the UK but one way to obtain a skill virtually for free is to get an apprenticeship at a local shop. This is not to say "don't go to school", but going to school along with some practical experience will only enhance you ability and chances of getting a job in the future. Also, it will give you a taste for the job which you may or may not like.
Good Luck,

P.S. Working on instruments is great fun!

Newark & Sherwood college in Nottinghamshire offers a course in woodwind instrument technology.
