I have been thinking of entering the Eb world of clarinets for some time. However, before I make big purchase I would like to get a good plastic student horn for two reasons: first to begin to acquaint myself with "the Beast" and second, perhaps I might not really like it.
Does anyone have any experience or insights to either of these student models. Any advice will be appreciated

I am not familiar with the specific models you mentioned. However, being the owner of a Selmer Bundy Resonite (beginners) Eb clarinet that plays almost as well as my pro level Yamaha, I would guess that the Selmer 1405 would be the effer of my choice. But, you should play both and decide for yourself. It might also be enlightening for you to try a Buffet E11 Eb before you make your fingal choice. The Buffet E11 models are intended as student/intermediate level instruments that are priced quite reasonably, yet play like their professional level "big brothers." I suspect an E11 Eb would not cost significantly more than the Selmer 1405 Eb, and you would be getting an instrument that you could play for a long time without needing to "upgrade" to a "better" clarinet. E11's are already "good enough" for many advanced playing venues. Hope this helps a bit--let us know what you decide.....and why. Good luck!!!!!!

I have a Yamaha YCL-280 that I purchased off Ebay. It's my "toy" but I find it fun to play. The only work I've done to it is to replace a couple pads & the mouthpiece is the one that came with it - carefully cleaned, mind you! - so it's not the perfect setup or configuration yet. But with that said, I think it's a great instrument. It seems to play reasonably in tune and has a reasonably nice sound. The key action is pretty good. Basically I'm happy and I'd buy another. The only thing I don't like about it is the cheezy wood-grain finish. Basic plastic looks better IMO.

When I started playing Eb at school, I used the school's old Noblet 45. I found it pretty good to play and they are reasonably priced.
