I played some sax in high school, in the pep band. I am interested in maybe doing that again, to play in the college pep band. I played tenor sax in high school, but I think I would like to try alto sax. We have a ton of tenor players right now. What would be a decent student alto sax? I have read here that student vito clarinets are good, are the student vito saxes also good?

I like the Yamaha YAS23 as a good beginner alto sax. Many of my younger students play them, and their quality and workmanship seems to be quite good. Their sound is pleasing and the intonation is excellent. They also (at least for my students) tend to stay in adjustment for long periods of time.
Actually, I even own a YAS23 alto for those outdoor gigs with threatening weather, and where my Selmer Mark VI would be at risk. The Yamaha has needed very minimum maintenance for the 15 years I have owned it. In fact, I can hardly remember the last time it needed any work at all.
Others beginning student level instruments may be as good or better, but I have yet to come across one..GBK

I have a Yamaha YAS 23 and it is built very well and sounds good with a Selmer C* mouthpiece. I picked it up on Ebay for less than 500.00 and would recommend one as a first sax.

I have a Vito student alto sax, currently my only saxophone. It certainly suits me. It was made by Yanagisawa in Japan, as is the YAS23. Comparing it with a YAS23 reveals that the two instruments are identical except for the bell markings and color. The Vito is lacquered in a gold color, while the Yamaha has a clear lacquer. No one seems to dislike these instruments, and the price is right.
Consistent with the comments of GBK (who speaks straight), I have been told of several professional players who use one of these at any "questionable" gigs. Perhaps not the best made, but quite a satisfactory piece.

the vito student sax and the yamaha 23 are made by yamaha. why would a huge company like yamaha need some one else to make a sax for them?there are some vito saxes that were made by yanigasawa but they are not the student models.

Good question. Also, why would a huge company like Yamaha need someone else to make a Clarinet for them? I don't know, but it seems to be common knowledge that some of the low-end Yamahas are made by Vito, Or, for that matter, why would a huge company like Leblanc need someone else to make a sax for them? Especially considering the very close relationship between Leblanc Kenosha and Yanagisawa. Strange things can happen in the business world.
I am always open to later and more accurate information. Perhaps yours is better than that of the Yamaha seller who told me the YAS23 is made by Yanagisawa.
