I like the Yamaha YAS23 as a good beginner alto sax. Many of my younger students play them, and their quality and workmanship seems to be quite good. Their sound is pleasing and the intonation is excellent. They also (at least for my students) tend to stay in adjustment for long periods of time.

Actually, I even own a YAS23 alto for those outdoor gigs with threatening weather, and where my Selmer Mark VI would be at risk. The Yamaha has needed very minimum maintenance for the 15 years I have owned it. In fact, I can hardly remember the last time it needed any work at all.

Others beginning student level instruments may be as good or better, but I have yet to come across one..GBK
