 US Navy Band--Wow!

I just got back from a concert by the US Navy Band. Wow, are they great!
When the sections play together, they sound like one. Oh, to play in a band like that, and be good enough! Maybe someday. Anyway, I talked to some of the clarinet players...I wanted to know what kind of instruments they play. Well, score another "hit" for the Buffet Mafia! They all play Buffet, each has their own preference. Some play R-13 and R-13 vintage, and most play Prestige.

They played a lovely arrangement of "Amazing Grace" in honor of the troops and the rescue of Jessica Lynch, Stars & Stripes Forever, Washington Post and an interesting arrangement of the Navy hymn. If you ever get a chance to hear them, definitely go!

The US Navy Band is one of the best there is, that's for certain. When I was an undergrad in college, I had the privillage of playing second chair to a former US Navy Band clarinetist, who had retired and come back to school to complete his performance degree. No matter what piece of music--including some quite demanding student arrangements and transciptions--we were required to read (play through), in the two years that we were stand partners, I never heard him squeek or play a wrong note. Ater his DMA, he went on to teach clarinet at the University of Denver (and recently retired from that gig). But that is the level of musicianship that makes up our great national service bands--and, even though my personal preference is for the "Presidents Own", they are all great ensembles and well worth hearing if their touring schedule brings them close to your home town.

BTW, our current UW-Madison Professor of Clarinet Dr. Linda Bartley, is a former US Air Force Bandsperson. (but I have heard her sqweek, once)

I play a hand-me-down Prestige from the military, issued to me by a community patriotic band I'm in. They certainly don't skimp on good equipment.

Wayne, believe it or not, I heard this band in Twin Falls, Idaho, where I live!
Twin Falls is about pop. 35,000 and is located about an hour and a half south of the Sun Valley Ski Resort. Our local newspaper sponsored the concert, all I had to do was send a stamped envelope to the newspaper and I got free tickets. Parking was not fun...the concert was packed!
