reed strength for Vandoren 5jb mp

Vandoren seems to recommend very soft reeds for the 5jb mp (strength # 1-1/2 to 2) even for good players, which I am not. Is this reed stength/mp setup suitable for the higher range? I am after better tone and reaching higher levels, say above high D. The low end sounds good.

For swing, pop, and Dixieland music......what reed strength do you recommend for handling both the low and high ends of the scale.

I personally don't really believe the whole matching the reed to the mouthpiece. I found that no matter what the mouthpiece, I always felt comfortable with a medium reed. I used to play a VERY closed mouthpiece (1.00 mm if I remember correctly) with a 3 - 3.5 reed when it was recommended to use a 4.5 - 5.0 reed. However . . .

Based on the old scale that everyone uses, I think that due to the 5JB's VERY open tip, soft should be good. However it also has a really long facing. Try a medium (3). That should be fine for every register.

I've had success with Gonzalez FOF 2 3/4 strength reeds with the 5JB. However, I much prefer my B45 Lyre mpc for jazz (thanks GBK!)

I use the 5JB frequently and can reach the high G with a Vandoren V-12 2-1/2. If you want to stay in the high register for much of your playing go with a slightly harder reed. The soft reeds give a big, full tone. My humble opinion anyway.

this mps is VERY open .i dont recommend beginners using this mpc . you would be better served to use a more traditional mpc.
