Hi y'all
I tried to get a mouthpiece measuring device. I can only find the one by Morgan--glass block with calibrations, etc.--but alas every place I try seems to be on "back order." Ferrees said they have been trying for 2 years. The biggie.coms of the music world have none in stock.
Any suggestions?

Hi CPW, I believe I have the solution to your problem. If you'll call Albert Alphin Wind Instruments at 1-781-449-4197, he should have them in stock. On page 15 of his catalog, he calls them: "Glass facing gauge for mouthpieces" and they sell for $25.00. He also sells the feeler gauge set for $9.50. I ordered my glass gauge from him and like it very much. As for the feeler gauges, I went to Sears and bought a complete set for less money. The Sear's set didn't have the largest size, so getting his feeler gauge set might be best.
Albert is open from 10am to 6pm EST Monday thru Saturday.
Good luck.
Dan

CPW ... don't get to bent over which make is used.
The glass with etched marks/feeler gauges is merely a guideline for reproducible results. If you always employ the same one, and use it in the same manner, you should be fine - REGARDLESS of what the gauge reads.
You could do the same with transparency overlayment on a stout piece of plate glass for the marks.
The tricky part is the tip gauge, which is more difficult to make.
Drop me a line directly, won't you?

I am confused! I thought Ferree's sold a refacing kit. Surely it would have some sort of gauge?

The most knowledgable folk re: mps [more sax but some cl] I have come in contact with are in the Yahoo group MouthpieceWork. They discuss measuring regurly and in their archives. I try to NOT do even minor refacing, unless a mp has minor nicks/scrapes etc where smoothing is obviously needed. Don Luck
Thanx, Mark, Don

Correct. BUT what they sell is the Morgan gauge and taper AND it is forever on back order to Ferree's and to the other online order companies. SO....I ordered the one from Alphin...a lot cheaper, but lacking the tip openning gauge...I am sure I will figure out a way to calculate/measure the tip (I have lots of calipers, woodworker tools, etc.)
Botch....I will email you from my home computer...this one is at work and has the ususal firewalls.
