David, the point is not rotary valves or pistons, but the dimentions of the German trumpets that are closer to the nats. They have a volume that suit the older repertoire better together with less strings than the modern American style brass instruments that tend to be too loud and out of balance with the rest of the orchestra. Also it's not only a matter of volume but the possibillity to have the trumpets sound "brassy" in fortes without being too loud. This effect is almost impossible on modern piston trumpets.
