I think of Benny Goodman and Eddie Daniels as clarinetists proficient in both jazz and classical music. What other clarinetists are in this category?Do most working clarinetists have a proficiency in both areas?

Although most widely known as a jazz alto saxophonist, Paquito D'Rivera is arguably an even better jazz clarinetist and has (especially recently) made more forays into the world of classical clarinet, including having written some pieces for clarinet ensembles, and he sounds great to me in the "legitimate" genres as well as jazz.

I think Phil Woods fits your criteria....I believe he went to Julliard for clarinet

You mean Ron plays clarinet besides giving you a great smile???

(For those that might not know - Ron is not only a great jazz player - he works as a peridontal and oral specialist!

Never hurts to have 2 careers!)

Mark:
Thanks for Ronnie's website.
He one of my idols!
Knowing him as a real person, a great Dentist, and, of course, an amazing Jazz Clarinetist.
All should hear, on that website, his "Daphnes", quite a display of Jazz/Classical playing at it's best.
Thanks, Ronnie

I think John Moses also plays a little jazz.... Even in high school, he was a terrific alto sax player.

I'd like to add Henry Cuesta to this list. Mostly known for his Jazz & Dixieland in small groups, but also for his 10 year or so stint with Lawrence Welk from about 1972 - 1982. I believe that early on he played with the Corpus Christi Symphony at an early age. I heard Henry play at a mostly Jazz concert in Toronto in the 1960's where he also played the 3rd Movement - Rondo - from the Mozart Clarinet Concerto. Henry is a supurb legitimate player and technically in the same class as Goodman, DeFranco and others.

I used to watch the Lawence Welk show just to hear Henry Cuesta play his clarinet solos. He was great. Artie Shaw had a unique style and sound. I thought it interesting when he said on a t.v. Jazz documentary that it was painful to have to play his 40's hits over and over and that he wanted to move on and improve instead of having to play what was popular. Pete Fountain is a great Jazz and Dixieland clarinetist.
