Polka dots ones are best.

I don't know if they're Bay or not but I bought black ones and I find that they blend in nicely with the black mouthpiece.

Some people believe that the mouthpiece patch should be as small and as thin as possible in order to minimize damping of the vibration of the mouthpiece. To do this, one can cut the thin clear patches in half with a scissors, rounding the corners and carefully locating it in the proper place on the mouthpiece. In addition to damping the vibration of the mouthpiece, the big thick black patches require that the mouth be opened more which can be less comfortable to the player. Good luck!

I use the thin patches on my clarinet mouthpiece, and thick ones for my bari sax (no high frequencies to worry about damping out on the bari). I tried a thick patch on the clarinet, and my tone sounded terribly muffled to me. (I didn't ask anybody else if he could hear the difference in my playing.)

I use the thin ones too, but I also think that it all depends on what you prefer...
Some of my students have the thicker kinds of patches, but they don't look like the right shape to be the Bay ones. Are there others out there? Or are they electrical tape or something...these kids pick all kinds of things up from their band directors and then can't tell me anything about them!

I have a question about these patches. I recently replaced my old patch with the same thickness and brand (bay). After I put the new one on, I seem to have a hard time getting a grip on the mouthpiece(teeth don't feel secure). Is there something wrong with this patch or could it just be me?

I use the Bay patches now......BUT........if you can find a brand of rubber dishwashing gloves called "Ebonettes" you can cut your own patches a stick them on with saliva and they hold well. They are black on the outside and pink on the inside...the pink side sticks to hard rubber. My teacher taught me this trick in 1965 and my stock of patches from one pair lasted me until recently. Unfortunately Lowes and Home Despot(sic) dont stock them, but I think they are still available at other stores.

Why not just good 'old fashioned electrical tape cut to fit the mouthpiece? Or scotch tape or electrical tape with a cut of a rubber glove underneath it?
I'm extremely lazy (not cheap). I bought a mouthpiece from a company that sends them WITH a patch on them. I was too lazy to buy a new one so I have this clear patch on my mouthpiece that has a little flap which you are supposed to remove the patch by pulling it. Noone has noticed so far though.
Also, I prefer thicker patches, but only because I have a slight chip in one of my top teeth and it will, after a short while (week or two) completely bite through the patch and reach the mouthpiece.
