 Gigliotti reeds
Author: B-flat Andy

As every other clarinet player, I'm on a lifelong quest to find the perfect reed. I have heard that Gigliotti reeds are worth a try. Is it true? And if yes, can somebody recommend a store in San Jose area carrying them?

They seemed fine to me. There are two types, the "advantage" and the "plus". The "plus" is the one with a thicker heart/vamp? I'm not too sure about the terminology. They are of the Vandoren V12 thickness. I was turned on them by my teacher who is a complete gigliotti person (since he was a student of Gigliotti I guess). So hence, I use a gigliotti mouthpiece, with a gigliotti ligature, and gigliotti reeds. They suit me fine. Who knows? Maybe one day I'll get the courage to try out a Gigliotti barrel. Maybe a selmer 10G while I'm at it. Or would that be too fanatical?

I found Gigliotti Advantage reeds to be well above average -- out of box of 8, seven were very good, which is much higher percentage compared to vandoren.

Wyatt, that's "Gonzales" reeds info you posted. Do you know where to get Gigliottis?

Gigliotti's website http://www.clarinetworld.com Graham's Music I believe has them http://www.Grahams-Music.com. It's not listed on his website however when I emailed him I think I remember him saying he could send them to me. Both sponsors of this board.

1st stop clarinet/sax shop http://shop.store.yahoo.com/1stopclarinet/

That's what I could think of off the top of my head.

I Thought muncy winds had them, cause I remember gigliotti in the catalog, but I guess that was just an advertisement paid for by clarinetworld rather than muncy carrying them. Sorry to those who read (past tense) this before I edited it.

The PLUS ones are good. Kinda like a V12
Dunno about the Advantage one.
As for the other stuff.........swab is overpriced and who wants a banner with someone else's name emblazoned on it (tacky)
Ligature is chintzy, and the mpc. is ok.
Barrels.....anyone got a pic or description of them??

CPW, i have to disagree. I find the ligature pretty darned good. I have yet however to try a inverted bonade which seems to me does pretty much the same thing as gigliottis, but in metal (which means the screws will snap less! AAARGH!). The thing about the gigliotti lig, is that it fits the gigliotti mouthpiece. Which is, for lack of a better term, fat. It's a fat mouthpoiece. ANd I personally love the tone from the gigliotti mouthpieces, but the mouthpiece preferences and discussions have gone on far too long. I like it a lot, you don't like it a lot. That's fine. But I do think the lig is good.

Haven't got a picture, but incase you don't get information before thursday, I have my lesson then with a former student of gigliotti and this guy endorses (and got me hooked) on all his products so I'll ask him about the barrel. But you may have the information by then.

As for the banner with someone elses name on it, what mouthpiece do you use? Does it have a person's or brand name printed on it? Case closed. ;-)

It has the manufacturers name in small discrete(sp?) letters.

Well . . . . the person next to you can read it! Anyways, the big thing about the gigliotti swab is it's a jam free swab. The picture on it is just advertising. Plus, I don't think it's really tacky. However I have very little shame. I've even considered getting a two tone vandoren (shame on me). Also, you only swab your clarinet at the end of the rehearsel so it's not quite on display. Only for the thirty seconds that you swab.

Alexi

Disclaimer: I'm not paid by Gigliotti. Actually (sniff) I'm not paid by anyone! :'(

Actually, I don't even use the gigliotti swab, but I'm just defending it and playing devil's advocate here.
