Hi,
I know I bought the Szell - Complete Beethoven symphonie only a fortnight ago but I just couldn't resist buying this new release - Vienna Phil with Sir Simon Rattle.
Its FANTASTIC!
Has anyone else yet heard them?

I am suprised at that!
Was it just Harnoncourt on the podium do you think? I know his Beethoven interpretations aren't all that great!

I've always thought Harnoncourt excelled in the precision and structure of the music of the Baroque and early Classical. After 1775 or so, I think he lacks the flexibility needed to bring this music to life...GBK

I am a huge Harnoncourt fan. I'm really surprised to hear that there are people out there that don't like his work! I consider his Beethoven cycle a masterpiece. He's conducted our orchestra in music from Baroque to Romantic, and it's always one of the highlights of our season. Every note in the score has life and meaning. While his interpretations are not by any means "traditional", they seek the truth behind the notes, and are some of the most expressive performances I've heard.
I guess it's a matter of taste?

Yes- I've worked with Harnoncourt. I play in the orchestra of the Zürich opera house. He usually conducts us once or twice per season.
I heard today that this was the first time that Harnoncourt has conducted in the USA. Is this correct?
Harnoncourt has a huge following in Europe. But he is quite controversial, and sometimes gets bad critiques here too.
A few seasons ago we played Schubert's 'Alfonso und Estrella' with him. He turned this fairly unknown opera into a wonderful musical experience. They recorded the performances, but I don't now if it's ever going to be released on CD. I hope it is, because it's got a wonderful clarinet part!
