 "Beyond Silence" poster
Author: Ralph G

I just rented the movie "Beyond Silence," which I see has been discussed here before. Haven't watched it yet, though. But has anyone looked closely at the poster/video case? This girl is supposed to be a clarinet prodigy?

She's got one of those rare inverted Bonade mouthpieces.

Maybe she just enjoys doing things the hard way.

And who made that instrument? It looks sort of like a combination Boehm/Albert/Obscure system. And it's likely to be the only one known with the right joint almost as long as everything else above it. Must offer weird intonation. Looks as if someone cleverly put together the lower half of an A Clarinet with the upper half of an Eefer, maybe. Not easy.

Holding the Clarinet below the mid-joint as if it's intended to be a raincatcher is even more bizarre. What an unnatural way for a player to pick up a Clarinet! I just tried that, and it really seemed like a stupid move. It felt as if either the Clarinet or my lweft hand would need to be untied or something before playing.

Then again, perhaps I'm just narrow-minded. It all depends on which end she holds up to her mouth, right?

Perhaps this film (or at least its advertising) was just not intended for Clarinet players. It does seem as if any graphic artist who's going to create a picture of a Clarinet would try to discover what one looks like, doesn't it?

I remember when I first saw "The Benny Goodman Story." There was big hype that Steve Allen (a remarkably talented person) had learned to play Clarinet for the film. If he did, he somehow failed to exhibit that skill while the movie was being shot. Maybe they meant to say he had learned how to *hold* a Clarinet. At least in this poster, that is more than can be said for the star of "Beyond Silence."

Regards,
John

Strangely enough, I found it hard to keep my eyes on the clarinet...
