 Meyer Bros. mouthpiece
Author: SJ

The vintage Meyer Bros. New York model alto sax mouthpiece is considered by many to be the Holy Grail piece. Has anyone played the clarinet version of this vintage piece? If so, how do they play?

I remeber trying one in the mid 80s and felt the it was more of fine jazz piece than a classical facing. It hadd some strange tuning tendencies, but overall it was pretty decent. I am not a jazz player however.

I've played on a lovely Meyer alto sax mouthpiece for years (jazz work). However, I've never tried a Meyer clarinet mouthpiece. I really don't know why but perhaps it is because they are not as common.

There is no such thing as a "Holy Grail" mouthpiece. I've played (and heard others play) many Meyer sax mouthpieces whose sound I couldn't stand, just as I've heard and played a few Kaspar clarinet mouthpieces I didn't like. Don't worry so much about brand and model --- every single mouthpiece in the world is unique --- just try any and every mouthpiece you can find until you get the one that feels and sounds right.

When I see that old Meyers are going for up to $1000.00 or more on ebay then I use the term Holy #@*$!

I have a Meyer New York true flex facing It plays well. I agree it seems to more of a jazz piece. The groove on the facing troubles me I think it can cause reed problems.
