 I am a nerd!

Remember that all time favorite joke-
Q:What is the definition of a nerd?
A: Someone who owns their own alto clarinet.

Well, I just bought one from ebay! YAY!

It's a wooden Noblet... I have no idea what it is like yet, I know it need a little bit of work. No cracks, may need new pads.

Anyone know anything about Noblet altos? Was $280 too much to pay for it? I can't wait til I get it!

$280 doesn't sound bad if it's in reasonable condition and you really need an alto Clarinet. Which certainly leaves me out.

It also depends on what the definition of "a little bit of work" might turn out to be.

Good luck with it, and enjoy!

Regards,
John

I was a nerd, but since I sold my wood Noblet alto (two years ago), I arn't one anymore.

FYI--It was a five-piece wood Noblet, bought at a local music malls "Maxwell Street Day" sale for $10.00. Cost $100.00 to put in top playing condition, and eventually sold for $550.00. Then, I went to a local tribal casino, and, well, you can guess the "rest of the story." Back to long notes..............

Absolutely nothing is wrong with owning your own alto clarinet. We're just kidding around. I consider myself somewhat of a musical nerd anyways as I am almost always practicing something.

What does one do with his or her own alto clarinet? Do you play in a band? Is there solo or ensemble music for it or do you just enjoy playing it by yourself? I have always wondered why people buy them.

my friend plays the alto in our highschool band. There is also chamber music with them included. My friend has also transposed solo, and duet music to play at compititions for her alto although I'm sure there would be solo music out there.

Clarinet choirs use altos at least some of the time.

I've heard of several ethnic players using them in place of things like Turkish (low) G clarinets, as well as for Klezmer. I don't think they're a good replacement for the Albert system Turkish horns, but I think the sound adds something neat and funky to Klez stuff!

Alto clarinet is for those that wish they had a basset horn, lol!

Some pieces in the ensemble I am playing in still ask for alto clarinets. I think their purpose was to double the french horn part in older music, cuz french horns were poor back in the day. Their sound was weak, so many composers would make the alto saxophone and alto clarinet parts the same or similar to the french horn so the line would be carried out. Then, some pieces just want a sound that isn't a soprano clarinet, and that isn't bass clarinet. hehe And of course, clarinet choirs.

And, William, this is a 5 piece too. :) Maybe I found your old one! HAHA!

Why? They are a lot of fun, despite all the people who dislike and complain about them. If nothing else, it's a different experience and a chance to grow even better and more rounded at something many people around here love.

The year I sell mine, my community band music for the spring concert calls for alto solos and other noticable and exposed parts. Go figure. Now I'm scurrying to find one in time.
