If one is considering joining a performance group, but has had negative dealings in the past with some members of the group, should one still consider joining? Or is the experience likely doomed from the start?

Unless many years have passed I think you're likely to experience the same problems you did before.

Definitely not. Been there, done that, and regretted it.

I was in a group for a few years that had conductor issues. They canned him last year. I rejoined the group and love it. As did several other members who had also left the symphony. He was the biggest problem. It is amazing how much better the group sounds without him, and how much happier they all are.
If the problem is with fellow musicians and they are all still "intact" I doubt anything has changed. Is there another group you can play with?
Sorry, about your "troubles."

To misquote Emily Post,
"Unless you want to alienate your other guests, don't invite vegetarians to your dinner party."
You don't get to choose your family, be careful about choosing your posse.
