 reccommend a clarinet duet book

I would like to work on some duets with a friend and only have one duet by Berr that is getting kind of old. Can anyone reccommend a good book of challenging classical duets to work on?

Also, I was looking at "6 duets for 2 clarinets" opus 70 by Mozart. I have never heard this and am interested. Can anyone describe it or reccomend it in addition to a good book?

I've been playing for 5 years.

Check the HITE SITE, he's one of the BB sponsors.
He has great, challenging duets by LaBanchi and others.
Go for it!

I'm pretty sure that mozart wrote 12 duets. I'm not positive. Also, you can take ANY duet book, and if both parts are played with the same key insturment, they will work. For instance, you can take a trumpet duet book, or an oboe (?) duet book (just for examples). Any will work, although some may be tougher than others (like a violin duet book may have many over the break jumps since on a violin it's simply a matter of bow position instead of register key).

Also, search for some midis. I know there's a section here with music files and midis. I found a lot of duets, trios, and solos with piano accompaniment here. However, if you want to PERFORM it, it's best to buy it since someone is trying to make a living by writing them. I just use them to practice and sightread and (just like you) to play with a friend for fun.

The Rubank duet collections are good, long and cheap. There are two books, an easier one and a slightly harder one. Also, if you have a pianist around, try the Mendelssohn concertpieces. They're a bit harder than the Rubank books but worth the work.

The Rubank books are edited by H. Voxman - the second one contains some great duets, including several Bach inventions that work great for two clarinets, as well as Beethoven/Baermann clarinet-Bassoon duets for two clarinets.

I would especially recommend the duet transcriptions of Mozart operas by Busch. They were written in the early nineteenth century and are outstanding - Magic Flute, Figaro and Don Giovanni. They are published by Schott, Mainz, and generally available. They are great music, not just clarinet duets.

Other Mozart duets (two volumes edited by Stanley Drucker, published by IMC) are also wonderful - they're based on violin sonatas, I think.

The Cavallini duets published by Hite are long, extended studies in duet form, and musically uninteresting

There are very many trio sonatas that can be played as duets. They are often written for two flutes, two violins, two oboes, etc with a bass part. For duet playing, just leave off the bass part and play with two clarinets.

The Vivaldi trio sonata for two oboes and continuo is especially musical and charming while not being too difficult. Other trio sonatas by C.P.E. Bach or J.S. Bach(Musical Offering) can be very challenging to play in a musical manner. Good luck!!

For trio sonatas, you can use a bass clarinet on the continuo part, and then nobody has to transpose.

Some friends and I once played a game. If someone unfamiliar with classical music asked you to recommend an unquestionably great yet accessible piece to start with, what would be your most likely and least likely choices.

For the most likely, we split between Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and Handel's Water Music.

For the least likely, we were unanimous on the Trio Sonata from Bach's Music Offering.

Still, great music demands to be played, and if you don't know The Musical Offering, you have one of the peak experiences in music ahead of you.

Best regards.
