Having a golden opportunity for mini family reunion, we will join our West-Coast elder son [maybe elder daughter also] in N O for a few days and more $'s!, when he attends a Phy-Chem-pharmaceutical conf. . I'm out of touch with today's Dixie/jazz and will appreciate any/all advice on what to see-hear . During the day, we will prob. view Sachmo's tpt, maybe go to Pres. Hall and Pete F's, eat Cagun, look in pawns!!, but the "kids" will want a bit of nite-life [up to our 11PM B_T. Tks, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Pete Fountain's place is at the Hilton, and the performance schedule is rather limited. You may need to plan around it. If you like "Dixieland"-style trad, it's sort of a must to hit Preservation Hall in the French Quarter. Other than that, perhape best to search for NO websites to find out what will be going on while you are there.

I used to spend time in NO a couple of times a month, and I always felt especially fortunate if a funeral procession was to be seen/heard. Haven't been there in a bit over a year (too long to offer current suggestions), and I do miss it. In recent times, the music has expanded considerably from traditional jazz. Some of the newer stuff is just fine with me, especially the blends with Cuban-style rhythms and cadences.

Have a great time!

Regards,
Joh

I'm partial to listening to good Zydeco down in NO.

Here's my thumbs up and thumbs sideways recommendations after visiting NO a couple of months ago:

Thumbs up: Doreen http://www.doreensjazz.com, a dixieland clarinetist street musician extrordinaire. When in town she is in front of the Catholic Church. Strike up a conversation with her between sets; she loves to talk with fellow clarinetists and will give a discount on her CD's to such folk.

Thumbs sideways: Preservation Hall, (hall is a misnomer - preservation ROOM is more like it. Hot, no place to sit, crowded, and I was not that impressed with the low energy dixieland the one time I visited.

TKS, Joh, Mark, Jerry - We "sweated it out" at Pres Hall several years ago, would rather hear "old-timey" in greater comfort! Will have to check out Zydeco and WILL listen to "busking", Doreen etc, and hope for a parade, it is Lent, isn't it!! TRIED to play a bit of karaoke-style jazz last nite in a Elks bar, found out the chord/key changes [and bridges] need renewal, read too much, hurts playing!! appreciate all suggestions. Will report. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Agreed! I still miss Clifton Chenier. Lots of good Cajun stuff can be excellent, too... Yeah, Beausoleil, and such as that. Also, my wife is a great fan of Marcia Ball (me, too, bot not as strongly as she).

Also agreed: Preservation Hall is far from the greatest place on Earth, and the music is not the greatest. But not going there would be like going to Washington without bothering to look at the Washington Monument. And whikle you're there, be sure and ask 'em to play "When the Saints Go Marchin' In." They will love you for it. (There is a sign which has been there throughout human memory. It reads, "Requests: $1.00, 'Saints': $5.00." They must really get sick of playing it. And do let me know if the prices have gone up.)

Regards,
Joh

Don,
Snug Harbor is a jazz club with really good food. Its web site is www.snugjazz.com if you want to see a calendar of events.

best places to rummage for used instruments are out in the garden district near the university - i couldn't find anything worthwhile in the French 1/4.

as for Louis's trumpet - which one do you want to look at? The Louis Armstrong Archives at Queens college in NYC has several trumpets that you can actually play with special permission.

I saw Louis's first cornet for auction a few years ago - not sure where it ended up.

I've only seen the Preservation Hall Jazz Band when they were on tour, but I've heard from people who have seen them both in NO and elsewhere that not only will you be in a more comfortable setting seeing them in your own town, but that they tend to play better as well.
