A question for the jazzers out there. I've been reading a book on the life of tenor sax great Lester Young. In it, one of his long time sidemen makes the comment that Prez used to play the clarinet all the time for his own amusement, but rarely played it out. I've got some Prez compilation CDs and there is no clarinet on any of them. Does anyone know if Prez recorded with clarinet? As a point of interest, he evidently liked metal clarinets!!!!

He did record some clarinet with the Kansas City six. There is an excerpt on the Gitanes jazz series dedicated to the clarinet, but I've never been able to find the original recording, alas. By the way, based on this one excerpt, I think he' was good on clarinet as he was on the sax. FrankM wrote:

KC Six recordings are available from many CD sources. Origninally released on Commodore Records in 1938, they were recently releasedon CD by the following companies:
Commodore
Masters of Jazz (French label)
Classics
There are some KC Six recordings from the famous Carnegie Hall concert (1938) on which Prez plays some clarinet too. That recording was recently reissued.
He also played clarinet on a 1939 (?) date with Glenn Hardman (organ) which is also available on Masters of Jazz. Hardman was an awful organist, but Prez plays beautifully. Dizzy Gillespie also recorded with Hardman at a later date.
Also, prez played clarinet on a late album (1958?) for Verve records ("Laughing to Keep from Crying"), but he was so ill at the time that it is more crying than laughing. Roy Eldridge is on the album.
A great source for jazz CDs is: www.worldsrecords.com

There is some Prez on clarinet on the Ken Burns' Jazz Lester Young CD. It is really sweet.
Email me. I might be able to find an .mp3 on the web for you.

I have a Verve album of Prez with two clarinet tracks. It was very late in his career and he is not his old self on clarinet or tenor. Too many years of hard living.
But there are some older tracks out there. ©

Try "Pagin The Devil" on the Ken Burns sides. I believe that it's from 1938 and performed with his Kansas City Six. His clarinet solo is sublime.
