 Need Osborne info
Author: Morrigan

Hey guys, I need references to info on composer Willson Osborne (who wrote the Rhapsody for Bassoon, consequently the Rhapsody for Clarinet.). Can't seem to find much information at all on him, I basically know nothing about him!

Thanks again guys! =]

Google seemed to turn up quite a few hits (see below).

Morrigan -

Mark has provided an excellent search engine on this site. It should always be your start for clarinet-related questions. A search on Osborne finds http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=49359&t=49349

Best regards.

Morrigan --

If you still need (and are desperate for) biographical information on Willson Osborne and would like to pursue what might turn out to be a wild goose chase, you could put "Esther Boyer College of Music" (without quotation marks) into google. This music college is part of Temple University in Pennsylvania (USA). In 1986 it merged with The New School of Music in Philadelphia. According to liner notes on Jonathan Cohler's CD, "The Clarinet Alone" (on which he plays the Rhapsody), Osborne (a student of Paul Hindemith) taught theory and composition at The New School.

It's a longshot, but it's barely possible that the college kept some of the old materials from The New School, and might have old faculty bios or program notes from concerts. Finding someone who knows whether this is so may also be a challenge.

Good luck,

Todd W.

Here is a link to the IDRS web site that has an article written by the late Sol Schoenbach "The story behind the composing of the Osborne Rhapsody".
Hope this will be somewhat informative.
I love the Osborne Rhapsody and have performed it many times on the clarinet.
