Hello!
I'm looking for a short (2-4 minutes) sad sounding ![[frown]](http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/smileys/smilie2.gif) piece for unaccompanied clarinet. It can be a simple melody and can be classical or contemporary, it doesn't matter.
I'm grateful for every suggestion.

George Gershwin and Gordon Jenkins? Both superb, So here's my seconding of Summertime and Goodbye. Either one would be better than anything I can think of right now. Both could sound very nice on solo Clarinet, too.

Do Amazing Grace, the first time through in say in Concert Eb or F and then modulate up a 4th or 5th for a second chorus (with a little improvising would be terrific). See what seems to lay best under your fingers. I did this in a church Sunday service on soprano sax with organ accompaniment; it was very moving.

Somewhere By Berstein from West Side Story. You can find it in Broadway Showstoppers, Hal Leonard. Probably other places as well. I had a roomfull of people crying one time playing it so it's pretty sad.

Un Seul written by Kal Opperman for Richard Stolzman. I'm not sure of the exact timing, but it fits the rest of your criteria. I don't know if there is an official recording out there yet, but it's published by Carl Fisher. It's only $5.

I have an interesting piece called "Lullaby" by Koh Okumura. It is unaccompanied. It is a Japanese min yo....loosely translated in English that is a rural, folksong.
My basset hound howls whenever I play, happy OR sad. Or, perhaps that is a commentary on my ability.

since Ellington has been proposed, may I suggest "Saddest Tale," a composition/recording from the early 1930s. Of particular note to clarinetists would be Barney Bigard's "sad" clarinet intro to the piece. Also, Billie Holiday made her first recording with this song as part of a film soundtrack with Ellington (1934). She appears in the film as well.
The name of the film is "Symphony in Black," not to be confused with Louis Armstrong's "Rhapsody in Black and Blue" from the same period.

The Ellington songs have all been good recommendations . . . If you're considering "Solitude," check out Billie Holiday's recording of it with Teddy Wilson (I think). Also, add "Mood Indigo" to the list.
