Dave,
I was talking with Graham the other day. He told me more and more people are using it as a "real" C clarinet when one is called for. My son could use one right now (he's having to transpose the C clarinet part in the Strauss Sonatine).
On second thought, all musicians need to suffer :^)

It sounds like a good instrument from other descriptions I have seen. I don't mind transposing at all, but it looks like a neat "toy" to have (toy in the "guys and their toys" sense). I
m sure that my kids will have a blast - my 2 1/2 yr old already can get a non-squeaking sound on the Clarinet. Of course he would rather get a squwak, so I took off the reed, and gave it back to him. He replies - "daddy, it won't play without the reed!" - jeez....

A 3-year old playing a clarinet!?
Why not recorder to start? Kids can learn to read music and get the basics of rhythm, pitch, coordination, etc on a cheap, indestructible instrument with a very simple fingering system. Let them worry about embouchure, air support, reeds, and all that once they are already hooked on making music. Clarinet takes an awful lot more effort before getting results than recorder - sounds like a great way to drive a kid AWAY from music to me!!

Nope, just something to blow on occasionally. He has had a recorder for over 1 year.
It's mainly for me.

I just ordered one last week, and am anxiously awaiting its arrival. I've wanted a C clarinet for some time, and being strictly an amateur, I haven't been able to justify the price of a "real" C clarinet to my frugal self. I bid on a couple on e-bay, but they invariably sold for more than I was willing to pay. I'm hoping the Lyons clarinet is all it is advertised to be!

I spent ~$1900 on a Patricola "C" from WW and BW a few months ago, just to make it easier to play folk music. How much is the Lyons selling for in US dollars?

I got my clarinet yesterday. It is really something - extremely lightweight and very funky looking, but it sounds GREAT! However, be sure to use a good Eb clar. mouthpiece with it, as the one that comes with it is very poor - also lightweight plastic. Time will tell how durable it is, but Mr. Lyons guarantees free key replacement in the event of breakage. This doesn't extend to the springs, however. It comes in a very cheap plastic tube case, which I will probably replace at some point. The instrument is held in place by foam rubber at the top and bottom of the case, and the mouthpiece has to be left in place. There's nowhere to store reeds, etc. But for under $200, IMO it's a great bargain for a C clarinet!

If I were in a Concert Hall, and not feeling like transposing, I would rather have the $1600 Patricola....:)
