out of the mouths of babes

This is sweet and I thought I would share it with all of you to brighten up your day...it certainly did mine.

My husband, 4 year old son, and I were driving down the road the other day listening to Artie Shaw on the cd player when I turned to my little boy and said, "Do you know what we are listening to?" He promptly responded, "Yes, Mom playing the clarinet."

Here's wishing all of you have someone who thinks you play the clarinet so well. :)

What do THEY know?? My daughter once said something similar about me while the radio was playing "Stranger On the Shore."

Later in high school band, that same (now a clarinetist) daughter said--while commenting on a performance by the University of New Hampshire professor of clarinet at her high school--"He isn't so good--I've heard my Dad play."

(as I said before, what do they know??--but isn't it nice to be loved???)

While my wife is not a babe (age-wise, at least) she is not that musically knowledgeable. Case in point: I frequently work out on K622. The other night she came home late while I was struggling with the 3rd movement, and the following exchange took place:

She: You know, I can never tell when it's you playing that or that other fellow you listen to on the CD. What's his name?
Me: David Shifrin.

I would sure love to feel flattered by that. Unfortunately, I'm a realistic soul and realize that she, while truly loving Mozart, is a true clarinet layman.

Dang it

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

David -
My wife confuses me with with fighting cats when I (try to) play the Artie Shaw Concerto.

Just the cats? I've found that my rendition of Poulenc's 2nd not only annoys cats, one of whom committted ritual suicide on the front porch, but has also rid the house of mice. Just yesterday as I was working on some multiphonics, two mice walked into the room with a little sign that said, "Please kill us now!" The groundhog that lives under the house, stepped in front of a moving garbage truck.

When I took up Mozart's K622, we had an earthquake in this area, the epicenter was in Austria and I beleive it was Wolfy rotating in his grave and despite all this my wife still says she enjoys my playing...well except for the multiphonics maybe...BG! Thank goodness for loving spouses.

Reminds me... I saw a thing once where a guy played a clarinet and a tenor sax at the same time, blowing an open G on the sax and played whatever that famous bagpipe song is on the clarinet (starting on C). Sounded just like a full set of bagpipes. Now that'll kill some animals.

I have gotten some very interesting comments. When I completef my audition cd last year and was listening to it in the car, my mom, who is not very musically literate, said "is that your audition? It's not very good, is it?". That was a bit painful. On a lighter note, my sister, who is 6, heard me practicing Molly on the shore and came in and said "I'll bet you can play faster than your horsey can run!" Now, I didn't know speed at playing and horses running were comprable, but hey, it's a compliment!

So many instruments to play........so little time to play them!

Hi Ralph,

If you liked that with teh tenor and clarinet (BTW, the open tenor note had to be a concert B or a C# written on the tenor), I used to play an alto and a tenor at the same time. One hand on each (much like Roland Kird used to do - I saw him play in a local spot in my hoemtown about 1957-58 and he was amazing). You can play some really cool harmonys.

Oh. Thought the tenor was Bb and also had a concert F as the open note.

Interesting the number of single-hand combos are playable on instruments. I used to do the same thing with recorders when I was a kid, but I'd play each with a nostril. You can imagine nobody wanted to play them after me.
