Where are the good instrument collections? The Metropolitan in NYC has a decent one, but nearly all of their clarinets were out for restoration(save for an 1863 boxwood Buffet with regular boehm keywork and an old Albert).

Hi Ken,
One of the best that I know of is at U of SD in Vermillion, SD. I have been there many times and always go back when in the area.

On back, I visited the Bate and another smaller [WW] exhibit in Oxford, the [I believe] Royal College of Music in London, and the German {DE Museum} in Munich, very impressive. The USD, [earlier, Shrine} is very good, quite large, and a smaller [then] exhibit in Ann Arbor, U of M. Its been so long re: the Smithsonian? Museum [history/technology] I cant comment there. My first choice for a 2nd visit is the Bate, where I was invited to bring a mp next time! Circumspicie [sp?] , Don

I think the University of Edinburgh has a collection. EUCHMI or Edinburgh University Collection of Historic Musical Instruments.

Northeastern University's museum in Boston has a room of old instruments. I would've loved to play them.

TKS, Mark P, What a collection at EUCHMI, just looking at the cl's listed etc, it certainly rivals the Bate IMHO !! And to think that when we were there, [too briefly, I guess] all I looked into was my genealogy. Hope I can make another visit. My advice, Just Do It. Don

Please accept my absent-minded apologies, Al Rice! Claremont Colleges, LA area, has a fine, good-sized woodwind etc collection, well attended-to/played by an accomplished cl'ist. TKS again for our tour, Al. For those who have not read his tech/hist comments on Early Clarinet [and here], I believe his new book on our favorite insts will be available before long, I'll sure read it avidly. Don

I must "third" the USD collection. I grew up in South Dakota, but far enough from Vermillion that I had never seen the museum as a kid. I was there for the first time 2 years ago delivering a collection of vintage music for their collection.
Wow, what a place. Vermillion is in the middle of nowhere....as a South Dakotan I can say this, the rest of you had better not. It is worth the trip if you are in the Upper Midwest. They also have excellent research facilities and a wonderful brown bag lunch series. Next week they are having a basset horn specialist....I am going to try to make that one, even though I am nearly 300 miles away.
