I make items on my lathe at home and obtain Grenadilla at Woodcrafters
Supply. They do not have blocks big enough for bells, but they have some large enough for barrels or decorative items. I made a nice barrel from brazilian cherry and a reed file handle from rosewood.
One word of warning...this stuff is HARD and I would not undertake a project without good HHS cutters and proper jigs and sharpening techniques.

Many exotic woods dealers carry grenadilla. There are ads for woods in some music magazines such as the Woodwind Quarterly. The sellers of this wood say there is no shortage of the trees but it is very difficult to get workers to go into the hot dry areas where it is grown, to cut it down, and haul the heavy logs out.
One should be careful in working with exotic woods to not breath the dust as it could be toxic. I recall that oboe maker Mr. Laubin had a cardiac arrest while working with one type of wood. When I got a new Hammig wood piccolo a couple of years ago, my lower lip became inflamed a little, a probable allergic reaction. It's ok now. Good luck!

Although African the main traders in Grenadilla, Dalbergia Melanoxylon, are located in Hamburg, Germany. It is obtainable in blocks, billets and other forms such as sheets. Luthiers and violin makers also use it occasionally. Grenadilla is used for other purposes like knife handles. Any exotic wood importer will be able to obtain it, it is just a question of whether they want to or not. As stated above Grenadilla is hard and requires good tools and some skill to turn. I make use of an expert when I need any turning done, especially hard woods. Further to what Wes said above, most wood dust is toxic in some way. Grenadilla is not as bad as some the worst and most toxic wood used in instruments is probably European/British boxwood, Buxus Sempervirens, which is carcinogenic or cancer causing. It is the dust that is the problem and few people react to the wood itself. Other wood is self combustible, camphor wood (not camphor laurel) often sets on fire if you drill or rout it but it makes beautiful guitar or viol backs because flaming it is easy.

I was fortunate enough to be able to get a drop spindle to spin wool on...made from grenadilla! I have an unfortunately expensive fiber art hobby, and I couldn't resist getting a spindle made from "clarinet wood!"

I went to the Gilmer wood website and they say that they have a $100 minimum. It sure seems strange that they wouldn't let me purchase something if the items totaled less than $100, but I don't know what else it could mean. I do not want to spend that much. But darnit, they have such good prices!

actually a $100 minimum is not at all the exception- for instance (just one example off the top of my head) Weiner music won't do international orders for less than $us100. Reeds Australia will only sell reed blanks in big orders of $aus150..... (approx 75 Euro)

Ferree's used to sell grenadilla billets. I think they were 12" X 4". I don't recall seeing them in their recent catalog. Their information is listed in the retail section on the BB here.
