Need info on a Leblanc A
Author: Jeroen
Date:   2003-03-13 08:05

I need some info on a Leblanc A clarinet.
The only thing I have is the serial number: 26995

I can try the instrument but it is a long distance to drive so I wonder if someone can help me with some information e.g. type, bore-size etc.

You might try their website: http://www.gleblanc.com

I went to the Leblanc site. It has almost zero information on it, and it traps you so you can't "backspace" out to the prior page.

Unfortunately, Leblanc has not made its serial numbers available, either online or to its phone representatives at it's U.S. offices. See http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/Equipment/HowOld/index.html

I have had good luck by calling Eric Steuber, who is very courteous and has looked up serial numbers and gotten back to me the next day.

If you know the model name, the Leblanc players on the board can date the instrument to within 5-10 years.

Best regards.

Actually, there is decent information on the Leblanc site, though it's hard to find. The PDF catalogs have just about all the info you need on bore size and other specs.

Bb clarinet catalog: http://www.gleblanc.com/pdf/catpages/pdf/leb-Bb.pdf (most are also available in A and have similar specs)

Bb/A comparison chart: http://www.gleblanc.com/pdf/catpages/pdf/lebBFcht.pdfd

Assuming that LeB numbered their A's along with their Bb's, looking at my and my son/grandson's ser #s, I'd place it about 1960-5. As Ken said, a model name would help, as I have several brochures which introduce new models and list the older ones. I have a high regard for the top LeB's from about 1950 plus. Will look for yours on EBAY and report if I find any diffs/info. Don

Thanks so far,

Don,
There seems to be a "6" within the Leblanc logo. Is the model L6 then?
You think it is worth then to try it?

Btw. I have sent a request to Leblanc's serialnumber email address which is on their site but have not received an answer yet.

Looks like an LL, just like mine. The Leblanc logo is a little different, but I have the same interlocking double L's on mine.I

Yes, that's an LL, just like my Bb. My SN is 23xxx and dates from 1964 according to Leblanc. If the numbering is the same for A's, then your horn should be slightly more recent.

Jeroen- the leBlanc 'Double L' model is a considerably larger bore than the modern designs. These were built for power and volume, when amplification was not so commonly used on the bandstand.

What is your B-flat rig? You may want to have something a little more familial in the case...

Two thots come to mind. #1, a pic is worth 1000+ words; #2, isn't cooperation great?. According to my LeB "wall-hanging" poster, your model # is 1176A, described as "similar" to the Bb, 1176, whose bore is 14.80 mm [.582"], the same as my 1980s L7 #43xxx, a very-comfortable, easy-playing cl, for classics and jazz. The Pete Fountains are 15.0/.590 and have the 7th ring for fork Eb/Bb and articulated C#/G#, for more money!! Even tho Buffet was making polycylindrical bore horns as early as mid 50s, LeB didnt [as far as I know], ours are cyl's, possibly because of French patent "problems", would solicit any knowledge of this. You have a goodie. Luck, Don

Jeroen,

You don't have an e-mail address listed. Send me an e-mail and I'll reply to it.

The L7 was quite variable from sample to sample. I've played some that were wildly out of tune. I wouldn't buy without playing it or at least getting a money-back-for-any-reason-or-no-reason guarantee.

Best regards.

I've heard that also, Ken. Happily, I bought mine from a friend, far better cl'ist than I, who tried out several while running an instrument store. My good luck, I guess. My older Dynamic 2 is nearly as good!. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

What a great response!

I will play the instrument next week and keep you informed about the result.

Thanks all,

Jeroen
