 thick blank? what are the differences?

i can see many different reed brands out there, the popular ones being
Rico & Vandoren.......they have many different series that suits each potential player's needs.......well.......so how does each help in our playing?
i have been using rico grand concerts 2 1/2 for the past 2 years or so.....
then i decided to take a try on the thick blanks......i found them to be MUCH MUCH better......intonation control, tone, dynamics.......so what does thick blank mean and why do they differ so much from the grand concerts?
