Hi !
My clarinet needs an overhaul and my teacher recommonded Peter Spriggs in Canada. Has anyone heard anything about him ? Anyone worked with him before ? Do you think it's safe to send the instrument across the border ? I'm very protective of my baby and want to get all the info I can before I ship it off to foreign fingers :)

Thanks soo much !
Laur

Laur -

Peter Spriggs is excellent. He took a pair of 1908 Buffets that had been in an attic for 90 years and were practically unrecognizable as clarinets, and they came back looking and playing like new. Highly artistic work, done quickly, and in Canadian dollars, so his prices are lower than in the U.S.

He lives just north of the border in Vancouver and has a U.S. address for shipment, so there are no customs problems.

Best regards.

Laurie --

And he's a sponsor of this site. Look for the picture of the shark under the Instruments category.

I have not had Peter do any repair work for me but friends have the highest compliments for his work and expertise in repair and setup of clarinets that he sells. I use his floating rail ligature and love it. You have some excellent choices among the Woodwind.org sponsors.

I'll second that one! I've used it exclusively for the last 4 years. I've found ligatures I like equally, but none I've liked better - so I haven't had to become a ligature junkie.

Allow me to add my vote of support for Peter's work. Last spring he overhauled my 43 year old Boosey & Hawkes 1010 quickly and very nicely. His overhaul is comparable to what most technicians include, but he also instals cork pads in the upper joint and his own pads, which I think are gore-tex, in the lower joint. Embarrassingly for me, he found two cracks I hadn't noticed and pinned them neatly. The clarinet has been playing very nicely and consistently since the overhaul. His prices are reasonable, especially if you are used to paying in U.S. funds!
