ok, middle c difficult to play on bass clarinet, air hissing from register key.
using the 1st (top) right trill key instead of the register key, not only sounds good, but it's in tune!?!? it is difficult to finger. what is the purpose of the register vent? the task now is to get the note to play with the intended key. all i need is a screw driver and a dremmel tool.
the question is ( oh, there's a question), why is this happening?

(you don't have to be crazy to work here. but it helps)

One would presume you are speaking of C5 as we call it in these parts, the C written on the third-space of the treble clef. Middle C (C4) is an octave lower than that one, by definition.

Also presuming you have a bass Clarinet with automatic register selection, there may be some misadjustment of that mechanism causing this problem or a small piece of detritus (AKA "crud") in the register vent. Cleaning the vent is not hard, but readjusting the automatic register mechanism is most likely a job for a competent technician. Of course, if the C does not do well, one would expect the B to sound pretty much the same level of badness. If it does not, then I give up. This is not an all-encompassing list of suspects but rather the most likely, IMO.

It isn't too surprising that the upper trill key could do double duty as a speaker. how on Earth you reach it with R1 down is the big mystery to me.

Regards,
John
