 Benny's Gig

Did a quick search and just came up with the fact that it's "available for purchase" basically. I was just wondering on where the dificulty lies. I was thinking about purchasing this cause I have a friend who's a double bass player and I wanted to do something different, and perhaps perform it at a local open mike night in a cafe. Anyone have any idea on "how dificult" it is to perform? I know it's a vague question, but, while I know that I am nowhere near the late benny's talent, are there one or two that would be considered "easier" with less technicalities? I haven't found one yet, but will probably buy it if I can find where.

Like the majority of Morton Gould's music, this piece is also “deceptively difficult”. For advanced clarinetists, the 8 mvts will likely take a couple hours to work up and as much time putting together the duet. On this chart, style, groove and feel are the most important attributes that separate a superb performance from a good one; you’ve got to swing at 80 as well as 120. Generally, all mvts isn’t that technically challenging except for a few tricky riffs on faster, walking 8ths and then some isolated phrase building that’s longer than usual.

A great little showcase piece for almost any audience (except maybe the Budweiser-chugging biker crowd); very satisfying, fun to play. It's also suitable as either a full feature or for cherry picking mvts as encores. For an audible reference (and memory serves), Larry Combs recorded it on his "American Clarinet" CD. Think Benny! -- Think Swing! v/r Ken
