What can you tell me about older "vitage" Brilhart MPCs? Tonalin? Ebolin?
Personaline" Who is Nilo Hovey? Thanks....

"Tonalin" = white, "Ebolin" =black. That's all I know. As I mentioned in a thread long ago about the old Brilhart mouthpieces, they were nothing special when I was a student, in fact, they were quite commonly used as stock mouthpieces for student instruments, and most players graduated to other brands as they became more advanced. I can't understand the current obsession (especially in the sax world) with Brilhart mouthpieces.

Hi,
As I recall, Nilo Hovey was an educator/clinician for Selmer during the 1950s and 1960s. Check the thread on white mouthpieces for more info.

Nilo Hovey, among other things, put together a beginner method called "Practical Studies for Clarinet." It's the book I first used. So Mr. Hovey essentially taught me how to play the clarinet. I'll commission a statue of him someday to put in my practice room.
He held the title of Distinguished Conductor at Butler University and Education Director at Selmer, as well as past president of the American Bandmasters Association.

there is a huge diff. in the ones made by brillhart himself and the later ones made and sold by selmer. the desighns are pretty much the same but the late ones are made of cheaper plastic as opposed to what ever the great necks are made of. i have a great neck tonalin for clarinet that cooks. my later tonalin alto mpc is only an average player. . sort of like the ny meyer and later babbit models
