BASS CLARINET LIGNATONE 4 KEYS LEFT THUMB
Author: Bob A
Date:   2003-03-09 17:26

I know it's e-Bay, but I am curious and too inexperienced to figure it out. Why 4 keys for the left thumb? What do they augment?

You sure it's the left thumb? Could it be four keys on the right for playing down to low C?

I looked also, believe its the rt thumb, prob. for the bottom notes on a low C, diff. from Sel/Buff fingerings. Need help from the BCgroup experts!! I "asked" the seller, didn't get much info, nor an offer. Am thinking about it. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Bob A - I looked again at the seller's info. He said it might go to a low A, concert G [I believe he has it mixed up with a low A baritone sax] . He said the bore was .0920 !!, believe he meant .920", a Selmer-sized BC bore [but where??]. Try him for yourself, and us! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

I agree, those four keys are rather clearly for the right thumb, operating pads for extended low range. Left thumb only has two keys.

Ligatone instruments were built in Kraslice, in the factory which is now Amati Denak.

John

Hello,

at 'germam system' low C bass clarinets there are 4 keys for the right hand thumb ususal.
It the model does not offer an automatic speeker key, there may be 3 keys for the left hand thumb ('thumb hole', 'Throat Bb and low speaker' and 'high speaker').

I hope, this information helps a little

Arnold (the basset hornist)

I've never seen anything like the eBay "Lignatone" bass, but it looks like a low-C Boehm instrument with the three extended lower notes operated by three of the keys, and I don't know what the 4th extra thumb key is used for. If I were wealthy I'd buy the darned thing to just to see how it plays, but the starting price ($1000 US) is a high price just to satisfy my curiousity..........Now if any wealthy patrons of the arts out there would be willing to buy the horn for me to assess, I'd be more than happy to [LOL].

Dave, all you have to do is sell a couple of your wife's horses. [rotate].
I DID ask the seller and he says, in effect, "I KNOW NOTHING". He thought some other player might know.

It looks to me like some redundant keys. There is the Eb key for the right hand pinky. So, does that mean there are two ways to play a low eb, if the thumb keys play eb, d, db, and c? And what about the four keys for the left hand pinky...an additional eb/ab key perhaps? What an odd duck. I too wish I had some extra dollars lying around the check this baby out.

I think the initial post was incorrect. The four thumb keys are clearly under the RH thumb hook and the upper joint has the normal thumb key and register key.

Since there's also a low Eb key in the RH cluster, I'd guess that the fourth thumb key is an alternate Eb so one can navigate the dreaded low-Ab to low-Eb jump. Does anyone have any additional information about the German system basses with 4 thumb keys, as mentioned above?

Graham of "Graham Music" sent me an e-mail that seems to explain our interest"
"the ligantone bass clarinet is an ancient amati, i would say from 70s, or
before, possibly even 60s. The instrument is a bad copy of the old
kohlert design. They have made much strides since then! The ligantone was
the flagship line for AMATI at the time. SEarch for lignatone on ebay,
you will find saxophones, tubas, trumpets etc. all made by AMATI. I dont
think it would even be worth that price for its condition.

The 4 thumb keys are still on their new low C bass clarinets, and are
really great! THe mechanism is very smooth, definately a superior design
in that respect (although they could use rollers) nothing else has
remained of the keywork however."

Thanks Graham,
Bob A
